James D. Martin

James Douglas Martin ( born September 1, 1918 in Tarrant, Jefferson County, Alabama) is an American lawyer and politician ( Republican).

Career

James Douglas Martin attended the public schools in Jefferson County and the Birmingham School of Law. He began 1937 in the petroleum industry to work. Then he joined in July 1941 in the U.S. Army and commanded by the United States entered the Second World War, a gun battery in Europe. In addition, he served as an intelligence officer in the army of occupation. He resigned in March 1946 with the rank of Major in the U.S. Army from. After his return to the United States he worked again in the oil industry.

Martin also pursued a political career. He ran unsuccessfully in 1962 for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Then he was elected to the 89th U.S. Congress. He decided in 1966 against a candidacy for the 90th Congress, but resigned to unsuccessfully for the office of the Governor of Alabama. Martin worked in the U.S. House of Representatives from 3 January 1965 to 3 January 1967. He ran unsuccessfully in 1972 to a Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 1978 and for the unexpired term of James B. Allen in the U.S. Senate. After that he joined in the petroleum industry again. He also held the post of Commissioner in the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and since 1987 has been its president. He lives currently in Gadsden ( Alabama).
