James Darcy Freeman

Sir James Darcy Cardinal Freeman KBE ( born November 19, 1907 in Annandale, New South Wales, Australia, † March 16, 1991 in St Vincent 's Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) was an Australian Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney.

Life

Youth and priests

The son of Robert Freeman, a tram driver, and his wife Margaret Smith enjoyed the training of the Sisters of Mercy in Elizabeth Bay and the Brothers of the Christian Schools in St. Mary's Cathedral College, Sydney, where he was a good student, interested in literature, music and sports enthusiastic. He attended the Seminary of St. Columba, Springwood and St Patrick's College, Manly. The Apostolic Delegate in Australia Bartolomeo Cattaneo consecrated him with special permission from Rome, since he had not reached the canonical age of 25, on 13 July 1930 and priest, he was incardinated into the clergy of the Archdiocese of Sydney. He then worked as a vicar in Grafton, Murwillumbah, Strathfield, Mosman and at St Mary's Cathedral. Subsequently, he was the private secretary to the archbishop and chaplain at St Patrick 's College of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He also served as parish administrator in Haymarket and pastor of Stanmore.

Bishop and cardinal

Pope Pius XII. appointed him on 9 December 1956 to the Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney and Titular Bishop of Hermopolis Parva. The Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Norman Thomas Gilroy, donated to him on 24 January next year at Saint Mary's Cathedral, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were John Thomas Toohey, Bishop of Maitland, and James Patrick Carroll, Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney. During his time as an auxiliary bishop, he participated in the first and last session of the Second Vatican Council. On October 18, 1969 and was added as a bishop to Armidale and promoted to Archbishop of Sydney on 9 July in 1971 after the retirement of Norman Thomas Gilroy. Paul VI. took him on March 5, 1973 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria " Regina Pacis " in Ostia mare to the College of Cardinals. In 1977 he became Knight Commander of the British Empire. On February 12, 1983 John Paul II accepted his resignation on the basis of the age limit. He then moved to St John Vianney Villa, Randwick and died on 16 March 1991 at St Vincent 's Hospital, Sydney, and was buried in the crypt of Saint Mary's Cathedral, Sydney.

Eponym

He is patron of the Freeman Catholic College in Bonnyrigg Heights, which opened in 1985 and has a student body of 1220 students and a faculty of 114 teachers and staff. The Cardinal Freeman Centre was founded in 1987 in Granville in the Vinzenzgemeinschaft. It provides accommodation and support for homeless men in the greater west of Sydney, who are affected by drug and alcohol problems. The Cardinal Freeman Village, Ashfield is a retirement home with accommodation for 380 people.
