James David Forbes

James David Forbes ( born April 20, 1809 in Colinton near Edinburgh, † December 31, 1868 ) was a Scottish physicist.

Life

Forbes studied at Edinburgh University, where he was professor from 1833. He conducted research mainly in the fields of heat conduction, seismology and glaciology.

At the age of 19 he was a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh; In 1832 he was elected a member ( "Fellow" ) of the Royal Society of London. The Royal Society awarded him the Rumford Medal with 1838 and 1843 with the Royal Medal.
