James de Carle Sowerby

James de Carle Sowerby (* June 5, 1787 in London, † August 26 1871 in Kilburn ) was an English naturalist and artist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " JCSowerby ".

Life and work

Sowerby was the eldest son of the scientist and miniature painter James Sowerby and his wife Anne de Carle. The zoologist George Brettingham Sowerby was his younger brother. On September 25, 1813 married Mary Sowerby Edwards. With her he had eight children, including George Brettingham, the younger.

, Begun by his father works' Coloured figures of English fungi or mushrooms " and" English Botany " he continued or revised it. 1838 Sowerby founded together with his cousin Philip Barnes from the Royal Botanical Garden near the Regent's Park. He was determined to be its first secretary and held this office until 1869. The company soon discovered these gardens to stroll and therefore called the Gardener 's Gazette this facility - much to the displeasure Sowerby - as Royal Botanical humbug.

1861 Sowerby sold the " Sowerby Collection", which his father, James Sowerby begun, to the British Museum. At the age of 84 years, James de Carle Sowerby died on 26 August 1871 in his house in Kilburn.
