James Dunlop

James Dunlop ( born October 31, 1793 in Dalry, Scotland, † September 22, 1848 in Kincumber, New South Wales, Australia) was a Scottish astronomer who worked in Australia later.

Dunlop, who first worked in a mechanical factory, constructed from 1810 telescopes.

After he had in 1820 made ​​the acquaintance of Thomas Brisbane, he increasingly began to be interested in astronomy. In 1821 he became assistant to Karl Rümker at the newly built Observatory of Parramatta in New South Wales.

From 1827 to 1831 he worked at Brisbane's private observatory in Roxburgh (Scotland). In 1831 he took over the office of the Director of the Observatory of Parramatta, which he held until 1847.

Dunlop published a catalog of 7835 double stars (published in 1826) and a catalog of 629 newly discovered misty objects (published in 1828), see Dunlop catalog.

For his achievements he was awarded the 1828 Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society.
