James Dunn (theologian)

James DG Dunn ( born 1939 in Birmingham) is a leading British New Testament scholar. He worked for many years as a professor at the Theological Faculty of the University of Durham. After his retirement, he was given the status as Emeritus Lightfoot Professor. He has theological research and work on a broad front from a Protestant tradition.

Dunn is brought particularly with the New Perspective on Paul ("New Perspective on Paul ") in connection he represents along with NT Wright and EP Sanders. He is said to have coined this slogan in 1982 as part of the Manson Memorial Lecture. Dunn is also a preacher in his Methodist local church.

Life

Dunn initially earned a master's and bachelor's degree in theology from the University of Glasgow. From the University of Cambridge, he became a Doctor of Philosophy ( PhD) and Doctor of Theology doctorate. Since 2002, Dunn President New Testament Studies ( Societas Studiorum Novi Testamenti ), the leading international society for New Testament studies. Only three other British scholars have been elected to the 25 years in the presidency. 2006 Dunn was a member of the British Academy.

2005 Festschrift appeared to Dunn's honor. It contains contributions by 27 New Testament scholars and devoted to the study of early Christianity, especially the beliefs of the Holy Spirit.

Dunn EP Sanders' project taken up the Palestinian Judaism recast and define. This serves to correct the Christian view of Judaism as a religion of works-righteousness. One of the main differences to Sanders is that Dunn finds a fundamental coherence and consistency with the thinking of Paul. In addition, he criticizes Sanders ' understanding of the term "justification" by criticizes Sanders' understanding suffers from a " individualizing exegesis ".
