James Edgar Dandy

James Edgar Dandy (* September 24 1903 in Preston, Lancashire, † November 10, 1976 in Tring ) was an English botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Dandy".

Life and work

After his education at the Preston Grammar School and Downing College, Cambridge 1925-1927 Dandy was an assistant at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew at John Hutchinson. In 1927, he joined the British Museum in London. From 1956 to 1966 he was " keeper " of the " Department of Botany " at the Natural History Museum London. Specialty of Dandy were the magnolia family ( Magnoliaceae ) and the genus of pondweed ( Potamogeton ). But he also knew his way around, especially in the fields of taxonomy and the older botanical literature. He often contributed to the clarification of taxonomic questions of colleagues, but therefore less published their own work. The ultimate goal was the stability of nomenclature. He was also involved in the problems of nomenclature of Flora Europaea and the index nominum genericorum. His most important work was the separate Index of generic names of vascular plants 1753-1774, which was published in 1967. 1966 Dandy retired.
