James F. Trotter

James Fisher Trotter ( born November 5, 1802 Brunswick County, Virginia; † March 9, 1866 in Holly Springs, Mississippi ) was a U.S. Senator for the state of Mississippi.

Born in Virginia, he soon moved to Tennessee, where he attended private schools and then studied law. In 1820 he had his degree in 1823 and opened his office in Hamilton, Mississippi.

From 1827 to 1829 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Mississippi, then he was until 1833 a member of the State Senate. Then he became a judge in Mississippi. In 1838 he took over for a short time the post of Democrat John Black in the U.S. Senate, who had resigned. His term lasted from 22 January to 10 July 1838. Then he stepped back also.

1839 to 1842, he was then judge on the Supreme Court of Mississippi, before he resigned from this office also. He had opened in Holly Springs in 1840 his own practice.

1860 to 1862 he was professor of law at the University of Mississippi.
