James Francis Stephens

James Francis Stephens ( born September 16, 1792 in London, † December 22, 1852 ) was an English zoologist.

Stephens was employed from 1807 to 1845 at the " Admiralty " ( the Navy Department ) at Somerset House in London. In his spare time he helped the zoologist William Elford Leach at installation of insect collection of the British Museum. After his retirement was his own insect collection, which included many of the holotype, purchased by the British Museum.

In 1833 he co-founded the " Entomological Society of London ", a forerunner of the Royal Entomological Society of London. From 1837 to 1838 he was president there.
