James H. MacLafferty

James Henry MacLafferty ( born February 27, 1871 in San Diego, California, † June 9, 1937 in Oakland, California ) was an American politician. Between 1922 and 1925 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1874, James MacLafferty came with his parents to Oakland; 1880 the family moved to Oregon, where they lived until 1883 in Eugene, and then in Astoria. In 1884 they moved to Tacoma, Washington. James attended the public schools of his respective home. In Tacoma and Seattle in 1889, he worked in the timber industry. In 1899 he moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he was engaged in securities trading. Since 1900, he was again based in Oakland. There he continued to work in the securities trading. In addition, he was then traveling salesman.

Politically MacLafferty member of the Republican Party. After the suicide of Representative John A. Elston he was in the overdue election for the sixth seat of California as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on November 7, 1922. Since he has not been confirmed in 1924, he could only remain until March 3, 1925 at the Congress. Between 1925 and 1927 he was Head of Department in the Department of Commerce ( Assistant to the Secretary of Commerce ). Then he took his previous activities on again. He was also vice president of the Pacific American Steamship Association and the Shipowners' Association of the Pacific Coast. He died on June 9, 1937 in Oakland.
