James H. Newman

James H. Newman ( James Hansen Newman, born October 16, 1956 Truk in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, today Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia ) is a former American astronaut.

Start of career

Newman graduated in on the La Jolla High School in San Diego, California, then he studied physics at Dartmouth College and graduated with a Bachelor cum laude in 1978 from. His master and doctor he made at Rice University in 1982 respectively 1984. Upon graduation, he continued to work at Rice University, and from 1985 by the way the Johnson Space Center of NASA.

NASA

In 1990 he was elected to the 13th astronaut group of NASA. He specializes in the portable computer for work in space, and the preparations and follow the crew of a space flight.

STS -51

His first space flight he graduated with the discovery of 12 -. September 22, 1993 His job was that he the Shuttle Pallet Satellite edited and EVAs new tools and techniques for the following emissions tested. The landing took place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

STS -69

With the Endeavour it went from 7 to 18 September into space to test assembly techniques for the ISS. Meanwhile, experiments were carried out which have the intensity of the solar wind measured and to measure the extreme ultraviolet emissions from the plasma Toros of Jupiter, originating from its moon Io. The landing took place again in Florida.

STS -88

Again he success with the Endeavour from 4th - December 16th, 1998 in All, but this time he was involved in the initiation mission of the ISS, because the space shuttle was the first connecting module Unity of the space station along with two coupling adapter (PMA -1 and PMA -2) in the hold. Here Newman was asked as a mission specialist, because he had tried on previous flights, the assembly techniques in weightlessness. In this mission was to land in Florida.

STS -109

He received his fourth flight from 1 to 12 March 2002 with the Columbia to the Hubble Space Telescope. In this Mision maintenance were performed, including the control system and the solar panels has been replaced. Again, landed in Florida.

Summary

After the space flight

From December 2002 to January 2006 Newman worked in the ISS Program Office where he was responsible for NASA activities in Russia.

From March 2006, Newman taught as NASA exchange professor at the Naval Postgraduate School ( NPS) in Monterey. In July 2008, he left NASA and took a professorship at the NPS.

Private

He is married to his wife Mary and three children. His hobbies include hiking, soccer, baseball, squash and Gliding.

He is also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
