James Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn

James Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn KG ( born November 30, 1869 in London, † September 12, 1953 ibid ), was a British nobleman and politician and first Governor of Northern Ireland.

Life

James Hamilton was a son of James Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Abercorn and his wife Mary Anna Curzon - Howe. He succeeded his father as Duke of Abercorn in 1913.

He was Member of Parliament for Londonderry City 1900-1913 and 1903-1905 Treasurer of the Household. Since 1922 he was a Privy Counsellor, and in the same year until 1945, the first Governor of Northern Ireland (Governor of Northern Ireland).

Progeny

The Duke married in 1894 Rosalind ( 1869-1958 ), daughter of Charles George Bingham, 4th Earl of Lucan with whom he had the following children:

  • Rhodesia (1896-1984), was married to his first marriage with Robert Kenyon - Slaney 1917-1930, then from 1930 with John Little Gilmour, 2nd Baronet
  • Cynthia (1897-1972), married in 1919 Albert Edward John Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer, she is grandmother of Princess Diana
  • Katharine (1900-1985), married in 1930 Reginald Henry Seymour
  • James (1904-1979), 4th Duke of Abercorn
  • Claud David (1907-1968), married in 1946 Genesta Mary Heath
