James Harrison (Australian governor)

James William Harrison ( born May 25, 1912 in Camperdown, State of Victoria, Australia, † September 16, 1971 on a flight to Honolulu) was an Australian officer and Governor of South Australia.

Life

After graduating from the Royal Military College Duntroon in 1932, he took in 1937-38 in exercises in India and the Malay peninsula in part. 1940, he was promoted to captain. During the Second World War, he was first employed in the Middle East, and later in New Guinea and London, where he mainly was doing staff duties.

After the war he was appointed commander of the Cadet School in Portsea in 1951 and promoted to colonel. From 1959-68, he worked at various senior posts in the Australian Department of Defence in Canberra.

On December 4, 1968 he was Governor of South Australia. Due to several serious diseases from April 1970 Harrison wanted to use for recovery following year. On September 16, 1971 Harrison died unexpectedly on a flight to Honolulu.
