James L. Elliot

James Ludlow Elliot ( born June 17, 1943 in Columbus, Ohio; † March 3, 2011 in Wellesley, Norfolk County, Massachusetts) was an American astrophysicist.

Life and career

He studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctorate in astronomy from Harvard University in 1972. He also served as professor of physics at MIT and until his death, director of the George R. Wallace, Jr. Astrophysical Observatory.

He also was part of a scientific team that the warming observed on Triton and auswertete.

Controversial is whether James Elliot, Edward W. Dunham, and Douglas J. minkam the rings of Uranus discovered, or whether William Herschel discovered the rings already in 1789. There currently are Elliot, Dunham and minkam as the discoverer.

The asteroid ( 3193 ) Elliot was named after him.
