James L. McConaughy

James Lukens McConaughy ( born October 21, 1887 in New York City; † March 7, 1948 ) was an American politician and governor of the U.S. state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Early years and political rise

McConaughy graduated in 1909 at Yale University and then did two Masters, one in 1911 at Bowdoin College and the other in 1915 at Dartmouth College. He also made in 1913 and a PhD at Columbia University. McConaughy had an extensive academic career. He taught English and taught at Bowdoin College 1909-1915. Thereafter, he was employed as a professor at Dartmouth 1918-1925. He was also president of Knox College in Illinois, and Wesleyan University in the period between 1925 and 1943. McConaughy decided in 1938 to pursue a career in politics when he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut, an office which he held until 1941. In the following year he served as President of the United China Relief Fund. After that, he was from 1943 to 1945 Civilian Deputy of the Office of Strategic Services.

Governor of Connecticut

McConaughy won the 1946 Governor Republican nomination and was elected governor of Connecticut a short time later. During his tenure laws have been adopted to assist the locals in housing finance, and approved $ 20 million for school construction, the rural communities to larger cities favored. The first state VAT was introduced. Furthermore, the unemployed were supported and increased the pensions of the elderly. It has also established a Fair Employment Practices Commission, and approved a special government compensation for the veterans of the Second World War.

James L. McConaughy died before the end of his term on March 7, 1948. He was married to Elizabeth Townshend. The couple had three children together.
