James Loeb

James " Jimmy" Loeb ( born August 6 1867 in New York City, New York, † May 27, 1933 in Munich ) was an American banker and classical scholar, art collector and philanthropist.

Life

James Loeb was born into a German - Jewish banking family. Both his father, the New York banker Salomon Loeb, as well as his mother Betty (née Gall Hill), a trained pianist had emigrated from the Rhineland. In 1867, Solomon Loeb Abraham Kuhn with the private bank Kuhn, Loeb & Co., and came to great wealth.

Loeb studied from 1884 to 1888 at Harvard University, on the one hand economic history, political economy and international trade law, on the other hand but also languages ​​, history and art history of classical antiquity. At Harvard Loeb joined the " O.K. Club ", which had formed around Loeb's teacher, the art historian Charles Eliot Norton. In this district also met Bernard Berenson Loeb, with whom he entertained a lifelong friendship.
