James Mackay, Baron Mackay of Clashfern

James Peter Hymers Mackay, Baron Mackay of Clash remote, of Eddrachillis in the District of Sutherland, KT, PC, QC (* July 2, 1927 in Scourie, Sutherland, Scotland ) is a British judge, among other things, Lord Advocate and Lord Chancellor ( The Lord high Chancellor of Great Britain ) was and currently is Lord Clerk register.

Biography

The son of a signal guard the railroad studied after the visit of George Heriot 's School Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh and was then a teacher at the University of St Andrews. Shortly thereafter, however, he began postgraduate studies in law and, after finishing his studies in 1955 admitted as a lawyer ( barrister ). As a lawyer, he specialized in tax law and later became a Queen's Counsel (Queen 's Counsel ) called.

In 1979 he was appointed by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher unexpectedly to Lord Advocate of Scotland, and held that office until 1984. At the same time his collection was done to the peerage as a life peer with the title Baron Mackay of Clash remote, of Eddrachillis in the District of Sutherland, with Clash remote on a shepherd's hut relates that he knew in his childhood.

In October 1987, he was appointed as the successor to Michael Havers, Baron Havers to Lord Chancellor (The Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain ) called and thus one of the highest and most important dignitaries in the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. He earned consternation by announcing radical reforms. His personal behavior also caused controversy in elderly influenced by Calvinism of his church clergyman, when he participated in 1989 at the funeral of a Roman Catholic lawyer colleagues. After ten years in office, Baron Irvine of Lairg followed him in May 1997 Derry Irvine, the Lord Chancellor.

In addition, it was established in 1991 Chancellor of Heriot -Watt University. After his dismissal as Lord Chancellor 1997, he received a knighthood from the Scottish Order of the Thistle ( Order of the Thistle ). In 2005 he resigned as Chancellor of Heriot -Watt University

Since April 2007 he is Lord Clerk Register of Scotland and thus assumes the office of the great state officials ( Great Officer of State ) true. As such, he was the successor of David Charteris, 12th Earl of Wemyss.
