James Metcalf

James Metcalf ( born March 11, 1925 in New York City, USA, † January 27, 2012 in Santa Clara del Cobre, Mexico ) was an American sculptor.

Life and work

James Metcalf studied at the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton (Ohio ), at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), and in London. He dealt with ancient metallurgy in the Mediterranean in the artists' village of Deia, Majorca, where he also created the wooden blocks for the prints in the book Adam 's Rib by Robert Graves, which he illustrated.

From 1956 to 1967 he worked in Paris in a studio opposite the studio of Constantin Brancusi. After a major retrospective of his art at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, to Metcalf busy with historic Mexican techniques of copper processing in the mountains of Michoacan. In 1973 he founded, together with the Mexican sculptor Ana Pellicer, the Adolfo Best Maugard School of Arts and Crafts in Santa Clara del Cobre.

James Metcalf's works often deal with the use of innovative techniques and make use of traditional methods. His work has been partially mapped to the surrealism in the majority of abstract sculpture.

He was awarded, among others, with the prices of the Clark Foundation Grant and the Copley Foundation.

Important exhibitions (selection)

James Metcalf introduced ( among other things) in Paris, London, New York and Mexico City in the most important galleries from.

He was a participant of exhibitions in the Goldsmith 's Hall in London in 1952. He also exhibited at the Third Biennial of Spanish-American Art in Barcelona in 1955 and took part in documenta III in Kassel in 1964 in the Department of Sculpture.

His works are part of the permanent collection of a number of museums, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, the University of Arizona Museum; the collection of the New York Hilton Hotel and the Museum of Yale University.
