James Mitchel

James Mitchell ( James Sarsfield "Jim" Mitchel, birth name Mitchell, born January 30, 1864 in Emly, County Tipperary, † July 3, 1921 in New York City ) was an American track and field athlete of Irish descent.

Overall, it was nine times U.S. champion in the hammer throw (1889-1896, 1903) and eleven times in the weight throwing (1888, 1891-1897, 1900, 1903, 1905). Previously, he was three times British champion in the hammer throw (1886-1888) and twice in the shot put (1886, 1887).

Mitchel was already 40 years old when he first participated in the Olympics. 1904 in St. Louis, he won in the weight distance casting bronze. In the hammer throw, he was fifth in the discus throw sixth.

When the tug of war games in St. Louis, he finished with the New York Athletic Club to fourth place.

He also belonged to the U.S. team for the Olympic Games 1906 in Athens between, but was injured on the cruise and had to do without a start.
