James of Portugal

Jaime de Portugal ( born September 17, 1433 Lisbon, Portugal, † August 27, 1459 in Florence, Italy) was a cardinal and archbishop of Lisbon.

Life

The nephew of King Alfonso V of Portugal, was educated at the court of the Prince of Bourgogne and raised at a young age as apostolic prothonotary. Since March 23, 1453 Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Arras, he was on April 30, 1453 also Apostolic Administrator for the Archdiocese of Lisbon. By reaching the canonical age, he was then appointed Archbishop of Lisbon.

Pope Calixtus III. created him on September 17, 1456 Cardinal Deacon of the titular church of Sant ' Eustachio. Now living in Rome, the Pope raised him on June 18, 1457 Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Paphos. Pope Pius II appointed him Apostolic Legate at Kaiser Friedrich III. and sent him to the emperor. On the way, in Florence, he died after a short illness and was buried in San Miniato al Monte.
