James Poe

James Poe ( born October 4, 1921 in Dobbs Ferry, New York, † 24 January 1980 in Los Angeles County, California ) was an American screenwriter.

Life

Prior to his career in film James Poe studied at St. John 's College in Annapolis, in the State of Maryland.

His first screenplay he wrote in 1948 for the Drama Close-Up. In the years 1955 and 1956, he worked on two projects of director Robert Aldrich. In 1957, he won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay for the film adaptation Around the World in 80 Days. Two years later he was again nominated for an Oscar, this time for his screenplay for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Two more Oscar nominations followed in 1964 and 1970. His last three works as a screenwriter made ​​for television productions, the last of which was realized under the title Hotel am See posthumously in 1992.

From 1969 to 1978 James Poe was married to actress Barbara Steele. Together they have one child.
