James River

The James River is a river in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is 660 km long and has a catchment area of 27,000 km ².

The James River is formed by the confluence of the Cowpasture River and the Jackson River in the mountains of the Appalachian Mountains, near the town of Iron Gate. By Hampton Roads flows into the river in the Chesapeake Bay.

The first permanent English settlement in America was Jamestown, founded in 1607 on the banks of the James River. An important role was played by the James River in the colonization of Virginia and as a transportation route. Richmond, the capital of Virginia, is located on the James River.
