James Ross Island

The James Ross Island (English James Ross Iceland ) is a large island on the northeastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, from which it is separated by Prince Gustav Channel. Southeast, behind the Admiralty Street, are the smaller neighboring islands Snow Hill Iceland, Seymour Island, Lockyer Island and Cockburn Island and north of Vega Island. The James Ross Island is 75 km, in east-west direction 64 km wide in north-south direction, its surface is 2378 km ². At Mount Haddington Island reached its greatest height 1630 meters.

On the James Ross Island in 1986, the fossilized bones of a Ankylosauriers were found. It was the first documented discovery of a dinosaur in Antarctica.

1903, the island was charted by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition, led by Otto Nordenskjold, who named it after James Clark Ross. This she had discovered during an expedition in the years 1842-1843, but not recognized their island character.

On the Ulu Peninsula at the northern tip of the James Ross Island Czech Republic operates the Mendel Polar Station.
