James Ross Strait

Geographical location

James Ross Strait is a strait in the Arctic Ocean. It is located between King William Iceland and the Boothia Peninsula in the Canadian territory of Nunavut.

The strait has a length of 180 km and a width of between 48-64 km. It connects the Larsen Sound to the north with the St. Roch Basin in the south.

In the James Ross Strait are several islands, including the Clarence Islands, Iceland and Tennent Matty Iceland.

Several polar explorers, including Roald Amundsen sailed through the James Ross Strait on the search for the Northwest Passage. The strait is named after the explorer and navigator James Clark Ross.
