James Rumbaugh

James Rumbaugh ( born August 22, 1947 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania ) is an American computer scientist.

The university education went through James Rumbaugh at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Bachelor 's degree in physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech ) with a Masters degree in astronomy and again at MIT with a doctorate (English PhD) in computer science. In his thesis named A Parallel Asynchronous Computer Architecture For Data Flow Programs in 1975 he described the basics of a computer architecture, which is based on the data flow. He is regarded as one of the co-inventor of this type of architecture.

James Rumbaugh, however, was primarily known for his work in object-oriented modeling. In the more than 25 years, during which he worked at General Electric ( GE), he has, among others, the object oriented language DSM and object-oriented modeling notation, Object Modeling Technique ( OMT) invented and instrumental in the development of the first graphical editor for OMT cooperated.

Along with Grady Booch and Ivar Jacobson, he developed the first version of the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The Three Amigos, as they are often called, came in 1994 in the company Rational Software Corporation a. There exaggerated James Rumbaugh and his colleagues the development of UML ahead, after 1997, the Object Management Group ( OMG) standardization of UML, took over as the representative of Rational Software Corporation in the OMG.

James Rumbaugh remained the company Rational Software Corporation after its acquisition by IBM in 2003 faithful. As a member of the core team for the specification of the Unified Modeling Language 2.0 ( UML 2 ), he was instrumental in their development.
