James S. Brown

James Sproat Brown ( born February 1, 1824 in Hampden, Penobscot County, Maine, † April 15, 1878 in Chicago, Illinois ) was an American politician.

Brown moved in 1840 to Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied law and was admitted to the legal profession in 1843. From 1844, he practiced in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Brown was elected in 1846 to the Prosecutor of Milwaukee County and in 1848 and 1849, Attorney General of Wisconsin. In 1861 he held the office of the mayor of Milwaukee.

Brown was elected as a Democrat to Congress and represented there, the state of Wisconsin from March 4, 1863 to March 3, 1865 U.S. House of Representatives. After an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1864 and his retirement from the House of Representatives Brown in 1865 traveled to Europe to restore his ailing health. In 1873 he returned to the United States and began practicing in Milwaukee again. Brown died in 1878 in Chicago and was buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee.
