James Spriggs Payne

James Spriggs Payne (born 19 December 1819 in Richmond ( Virginia), † January 31, 1882 in Monrovia ) was by Daniel Warner Bashiel the fourth President of Liberia. He reigned in the legislative periods 1868-1870 and 1876-1878. Airport in Monrovia is now named after him ( James Spriggs Payne Airport ).

Biography

Payne was the son of a devout Methodist, and grew up in a very religious environment, which influenced his strong Christian faith sustained. He was still a child when his parents decided to emigrate with a ship of the American Colonization Society to Liberia to start a new life there.

Apart from religion, his interest as politics and business. He advanced in these areas to a successful author, which is why he was appointed the Liberian government as a member of a commission to prepare the process of the final abandonment of Liberia by the American Colonization Society.

During his presidency, he fought against the slave trade along the coast of Liberia. In addition, he managed to increase the foreign trade of the country. But above all, drew him out of his domestic sensitivity, which enabled the development of relations between the Liberian government and the representatives of the indigenous population of the country. He was far-sighted enough to realize that the hitherto politically mostly ignored the locals for the future development of the young republic would play a major role. So he stood up for their right of participation and made sure that they were as education facilities.
