James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan

James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan, called Hearty James ( * before 1445, † 1499 ), was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family.

James was a son of the Black Knight of Lorne and the former Scottish queen Joan Beaufort. He was raised in 1469 to the Earl of Buchan. The Earl was High Chamberlain of Scotland (1471-1473 and 1478-1484) as well as Scottish ambassador to France 1473rd

James Stewart married his first wife in 1466 Margaret, daughter and heiress of Alexander Ogilvy of Auchterhouse, with whom he had the following children:

  • Alexander Stewart, 2nd Earl of Buchan (ca. 1481-1505 )

With his mistress, Margaret Murray, he left numerous children born out of wedlock who were later largely legitimized, among others:

  • Agnes (or Isabella ) (before 1495-1557 ), before her first marriage, she was mistress of the Scottish king James IV, who had a daughter with her. She married first, 1511 Adam Hepburn, 2nd Earl of Bothwell, secondly, in 1514, Alexander Home, 3rd Lord Home, thirdly 1520/5 Robert Maxwell, 4th Lord Maxwell, and fourthly, 1549 Cuthbert Ramsay
  • James († 1513), killed at the Battle of Flodden Field, 1st Lord of Traquair and ancestor of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Traquair
