James Stewart, 5th High Steward of Scotland

James Stewart (c. 1243; † July 16, 1309 ) was a Scottish nobleman from the House of Stuart and 5th High Stewart of Scotland.

James Stewart was the son of Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland and his wife Jean Macrorie of Bute. He succeeded his father in 1283 as 5th High Steward of Scotland.

James was one of the six Regents of Scotland after the death of King Alexander III. , Stood on the side of William Wallace and was later followers of Robert Bruce. He married his first wife, Cecilia, daughter of Patrick de Dunbar, 7th Earl of Dunbar with whom he had a son:

  • Walter Stewart (1293-1326), 6th High Steward of Scotland

His second wife was Gillespie, daughter of Walter de Burgh, 1st Earl of Ulster with whom he had the following children:
