James Stockdale

James Bond Stockdale ( born December 23, 1923 in Abingdon, Knox County, Illinois, † July 5, 2005 in Coronado, California ) was one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of the United States Navy.

Stockdale closed the Naval Academy from 1947 successfully. At the time of the Tonkin Gulf incident in August 1964 Stockdale commanded a fighter squadron of the United States Navy. During the Vietnam War, he became as the highest ranking Naval Officer September 9, 1965 to February 12, 1973 in captivity in a POW camp " Hanoi Hilton ". He wore 26 personal military decorations, including the Medal of Honor and four Silver Stars.

Vice Admiral Stockdale in 1992 was a candidate for the office of vice president on the side of independent candidate Ross Perot. Together they reached a vote share of 18.86 per cent. Stockdale died in 2005 and was buried in the cemetery of honor in Annapolis, Maryland.

2006 announced the U.S. Navy to want to name a destroyer Arleigh Burke - class according to Stockdale. The USS Stockdale (DDG -106 ) was put into service on April 18, 2009.

Management expert Jim Collins developed a leadership and motivational theory, which he described at Stockdale's experiences during his captivity as Stockdale Paradox in the appeal: So it was a 'need to see the brutal and often devastating reality in the eye and no false a state of illusion. At the same time one should not lose faith in the eventual success. This setting alone can stem the slide fatalism on the one hand or a naive optimism on the other.
