James T. Johnston

James Thomas Johnston (* January 19, 1839 at Greencastle, Indiana, † July 19, 1904 in Rockville, Indiana ) was an American politician. Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the State of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

James Johnston attended the public schools of his home. During the Civil War he served 1862-1865 in different units in the army of the Union, in which he rose to the rank of lieutenant. After studying law and its made ​​in 1866 admitted to the bar he began in Rockville to work in this profession. Between 1866 and 1868 he also worked as a prosecutor.

Politically, Johnston member of the Republican Party. In 1868 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Indiana; 1874-1878 he was a member of the State Senate. In the congressional elections of 1884 he was in the eighth election district of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John Edward Lamb on March 4, 1885. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1889 two legislative sessions. In 1888 he was defeated by Democrat Elijah V. Brookshire.

After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives James Johnston practiced as a lawyer again. In 1893 he was head of the Indiana Section of the Veterans Administration Grand Army of the Republic. He died on July 19, 1904 in Rockville, where he was also buried.
