James Tarjan

James Edward Tarjan ( born February 22, 1952 in Pomona, California) is an American chess player.

In June 1966, he won the Junior Championship of California. In 1967 he came with the California Open on the shared first place, in 1968, he won the Pacific Southwest Open in Santa Monica and El Segundo Open. For the U.S. junior championship Tarjan 1967 came in 7th place in 1968 from the split 3rd - 4th Place and 1969 on the split second - third Place. He was a member of the U.S. team that won the World Team Cup 1970 students. In 1973 he won the American Open. In 1974 he was awarded by the FIDE the title International Champion, 1976, the Grand Master title. From 1974 to 1982 he played for the U.S. team at the Chess Olympiads. He scored a total of 38.5 points out of 51 games and won two gold medals (1974 and 1978) and one bronze (1982 ) for his individual results. In Riga Interzonal 1979, he reached the 11th place. In 1984 he finished his chess career. He works as a librarian at the Public Library of Santa Cruz.

His best historical Elo rating was 2659 in May 1981.
