James Tully (Irish politician)

James (Jim) Tully ( born September 18, 1915 in Carlanstown in Kells, County Meath, † 20 May 1992 ) was an Irish trade unionist, vice chairman of the Irish Labour Party and held various ministerial posts in the Irish government.

Tully went to Carlanstown and Meath to school. He was a member ( Teachta Dala ) of the Irish House of Dáil Éireann for Meath. After the Irish Labour Party entered into a coalition with the Christian Democratic Fine Gael, he became in 1973 Minister for Local Government. In his time he was the one known to the expenditures for state -sponsored social housing rose abruptly, and that he was responsible to redraw the constituencies so that the government would remain in office ( gerrymandering ). His strategy was so notorious that it became known as Tullymandering in Irish history and was mainly attributable to ensure that the voters who taught government at the 1977 election a landslide defeat. After the elections in 1981, fortunately went out for Labour / Fine Gael, he took from 1981 until the collapse of the coalition in 1982, the Office of the Irish Defence one. In 1982, he suffered severe facial injuries when he was standing next to Anwar Sadat when he was assassinated. In the same year he retired from politics.
