James Ward (artist)

James Ward, ( born October 23, 1769 in London, † November 23, 1859 in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire ) was an English painter.

Life

James Ward worked mainly as an animal artist, but also as battles and genre painter. Many of his drawings with animals have become known through engravings, collected in a 1805 book published by John Boydell work.

On behalf of the British Government, he painted a gigantic allegorical representation of the battle of Waterloo that is missing today. He also created several genre pictures, including scenes with smugglers and poachers. In 1811 he became a member of the London Academy.

His granddaughter Henrietta Ward, also a painter, married in 1848 the painter Edward Matthew Ward. His great- grandson Leslie Ward was a well-known cartoonist for the magazine Vanity Fair under the pseudonym Spy.
