Woods grew up in Warwick, Rhode Iceland, where he attended the High School Pilgram. He then studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), but left this in 1969 shortly before graduating to pursue an acting career.
Woods made primarily through the presentation concise characters talked about and was twice nominated for an Academy Award: 1987 Best Actor in Salvador and in 1997 as Best Supporting Actor in Ghosts of Mississippi. He received praise from critics for the synchronization of Hades in the Disney film Hercules, which was spoken in Germany by Arne Elsholtz, the default voice of Tom Hanks. On German television, he starred in his role as a prosecutor Sebastian Stark in the TV series Shark.

On October 15, 1988 Woods received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.
