James Wright Gordon

James Wright Gordon (c. 1809 in Plainfield, Connecticut, † December 1853 in Pernambuco, Brazil ) was an American politician and from 1841 to 1842 the 3rd Governor of Michigan.

Early years

The exact birth and date of death of Gordon is not known. The sources range from 1809 as his birth year. Gordon studied at Harvard University. After studying law in New York, he began in Marshall ( Michigan) to work as a lawyer.

Political career

1839 Gordon was elected as a Whig to the Senate from Michigan. In the gubernatorial election of 1839, he was elected as a candidate of his party for the new lieutenant governor and after the resignation of the incumbent Governor William Woodbridge on 23 February 1841, he had to take over the governorship. His task was to end until January 3, 1842 current term of his predecessor. In these eleven months he was prevented from setting policy signals.

Between 1850 and 1853, Gordon served as American consul in Brazil's Pernambuco. There he came in December 1853 by a fall from a balcony killed. About his family status is not known. James Gordon was buried in Brazil.
