Jamsession

A jam session, even Jam Session (of English jam: slang for " improvise " and session " meeting ", " event" ), is a casual interaction of musicians who do not usually play together in a band and sing.

The jam session in Jazz

In jazz jam sessions can pieces whose harmonic schemes and melodies are played known to all fellow musicians (so-called jazz standards ), or it is freely improvised. Often the rhythm section, usually consisting of piano (English: piano, abbreviation: p), double bass (English: double bass, Abbr: b ) and percussion (English: drums, Abbr: dr), for sessions in pre- assembled, so that the adventitious musicians know what kind of music to expect.

Jam sessions were for the entire jazz development of great significance - in the early 1940s as many swing musicians met ( partially from big bands, some of them from small formations ) at Minton 's Playhouse in Harlem to " after hours" (after midnight ) are a small to jam. From these meetings in the early morning hours of bebop and thus the basis for the entire modern jazz was born.

When experimental dance as part of a Contact Improvisation Jam various forms exist:

  • Blind Jam: closed / blindfolded
  • Underscore Jam: it is specified at the beginning of a motto
  • Silent Jam: without music
