Ján Čarnogurský

Ján Čarnogurský ( born January 1, 1944 in Bratislava ) is a former Slovak dissident, politician, Prime Minister of Slovakia (1991-1992) and Founder and Chairman of KDH ( 1990-2000).

He studied law at the Charles University in Prague and at the Comenius University in Bratislava. In 1971 he began to work as a lawyer in Bratislava. He was one of the main characters of the Christian Democratic opposition movement against the communist regime. For this reason, he was also briefly arrested before the break, on 14 August 1989. Čarnogurský was chairman of the Christian Democratic movement in the years 1990-2000 from April 1991 to June 1992 he was the Prime Minister of Slovakia. ; from 1998 he served as Minister of Justice in his country. In the vote on the war in Kosovo in 1999 Cabinet to Čarnogurský abstained. Čarnogurský spoke in favor of joining NATO his country, since Slovakia " then it can not be bombed by NATO ."

In 2002, he announced his retirement from politics. Following this decision, he has worked as a lawyer again. Today Čarnogurský is chairman of the Slovak - Russian society. In German-speaking countries, he writes for the online journal Solon -line. He entered as an independent candidate with the choice of the Slovak President on March 15, 2014, but had no chance with a vote share of 0.64 %.

His father Pavol Čarnogurský was an important member of the Slovak Hlinka People's Party and one of the foremost anti-communists of that time.

Honors

In 2011 he was awarded the Adalbert price.
