Ján Chalupka

Ján Chalupka ( born October 28, 1791 in Horna Mičiná, Kingdom of Hungary, now Slovakia, † July 15, 1871 in Brezno, Austria - Hungary) was a Slovak writer, dramatist, publicist and a Protestant minister.

Life

Ján Chalupka was born in the family of a Protestant pastor Adam Chalupka; in this family also his brothers and also writer Samo Chalupka was born. First he got education at home, then went to school in Brezno and Ožďany, then in the colleges in Leutschau, Eperies and Sárospatak before he completed his studies in Vienna and Jena. He worked as a teacher in Banska Bystrica, Ožďany and Käsmark, then from 1824 to death as a priest in Brezno.

Works

Ján Chalupka is most known for his contribution as a founder of the Slovak drama. He wrote to 1848 in Czech, Slovak, and then translated into Czech written works into Slovak. Chance he also wrote in German and Hungarian. In his works of local patriotism or petty bourgeoisie, Magyarisierungversuche, sycophancy, conservatism and bourgeois cowardice are criticized and ridiculed. He uses the phenomenon of " Kocúrkovo ", the Slovak equivalent of the German city of Gotham Schilda or English. To date, the word is used in the Slovak Kocúrkovo to express underdevelopment, confusing relationships, chaos, and the like.
