Jan Frederik Gronovius

January Frederik Gronovius ( born February 10, 1686, Leiden, † July 10, 1762 ibid; Johann Frederik and Johannes Fredericus ) was a Dutch botanist and patron of Carl Linnaeus. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Gronov. ".

Life and work

Gronovius was the son of Jacob Gronovius classicists and the grandson of Johann Friedrich Gronovius. In 1719 he married Margaretha Christina Trigland, she died in 1726. 1729 he married Johanna Susanna Alensoon. His son Laurens Theodore Gronovius (1730-1777) was also a botanist.

Around 1730 it many plants were sent (including descriptions ) by the plant collector John Clayton. Without knowledge Clayton Gronovius used the scientific material in its Flora virginica, a description of the flora of the North American state of Virginia.

1737 Gronovius described for the first time Gerbera, which he named after the physician and botanist Traugott Gerber ( 1710-1743 ). This was known until now as African or Ethiopian Aster. 1738 Carl Linnaeus took the gerbera on in his classification of plants. In 1762 he mentioned the healing properties of echinacea in his Flora virginica.

Taxonomic ceremony

William Houstoun named in his honor the genus Gronovia the plant family of flowers nettle plants ( Loasaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name.
