Jan G. Waldenström

January Gosta Waldenstrom ( born April 17, 1906 in Stockholm, † December 1, 1996 in Malmö) was a Swedish internist.

Family

January Waldenstrom was the son of Henning Waldenström (1877-1972), a professor of orthopedics at the Karolinska Institutet, and his wife Elsa Laurin ( 1870-1939 ). His paternal grandfather was Johan Waldenström (1839-1879), professor of practical medicine at the University of Uppsala. In the first marriage of Waldenstrom January 1932 was married to Elizabeth in 1956 with Waldenström ( 1908-2000 ). The couple had three sons and two daughters. In 1957 he married Karin Nordsjö ( 1918-1990 ). From this marriage two sons were born.

Life

Waldenström studied until 1933 medicine at the University of Uppsala. He then spent a year at the Technical University Munich in the laboratory of Hans fishermen. In 1937 he received his doctorate in Uppsala with the work studies on porphyria. Waldenstrom 1947 was appointed professor at the University of Uppsala. From 1949 until his retirement in 1972 he was a professor at Lund University and chief physician of internal medicine at the associated hospital in Malmo (Malmö Allmänna Sjukhus ).

Work

After Waldenstrom 's disease Waldenstrom (synonym " Waldenström macroglobulinemia " ) is named, a slowly progressing malignant lymphoma, which is associated with an abnormal formation of immunoglobulin M ( IgM) and is considered one of the B- cell non -Hodgkin's lymphoma. January Waldenstrom described the disease for the first time in 1944 as part of a case report.
