Jan Garbarek ( born March 4, 1947 in Mysen, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician ( saxophone, synthesizer, flute ). He is one of the most important contemporary jazz musicians in Europe and is with its clear, ascetic Saxophonton as an outstanding representative of the Scandinavian jazz scene.

Life

Garbarek, the son of former Polish prisoner of war Czeslaw Garbarek and the Norwegian farmer's daughter Kari Nils yolk, until the age of seven years was stateless. He grew up in Oslo. As a musician, Garbarek was self-taught. Saxophone, he learned under the influence of John Coltrane, he heard on the radio in 1961. In 1962, he won an amateur competition. Soon he had his own band with Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen.

As the formative influences Garbarek also mentions the encounter with George Russell, who spontaneously jumped in on stage at the Molde Jazz Festival in the mid-1960s with Garbarek's appearance, and the influence of the late 1960s, living in Sweden Don Cherry. At the request of the early world musician Cherry he sought contact with Scandinavian folklore. With Russell, he played on the big-band albums The Essence of George Russell ( 1966), Othello Ballet Suite (1967) and Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature ( 1968); Russell called him the most original European voice since Django Reinhardt. In 1968 he was the Norwegian representative at the festival of the European Broadcasting Union (he played there, among other things Naima Coltrane ). He also took up with Karin Krog, Georg Riedel, Egil and Kapstad.

His first album under his own name he took in 1967 ( Til Vigdis ). From 1970 he also toured in Central Europe. The artistic breakthrough, he scored at the latest with the album Witchi -Tai - To ( ECM, 1974), whose title track of Jim Pepper comes and came across Don Cherry in his repertoire, as well as Carla Bley AIR and Don Cherry Desireless. From 1974 to 1979 Garbarek also joined on with pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Jon Christensen as Jarrett's European Quartet. He also set to music with other musicians of his Scandinavian Quartet lyrics by Jan Erik Vold (HAV 1971, Inge Tings Bjeller, 1977), and played with other musicians of the ECM labels such as Bill Connors, Ralph Towner ( Solstice, 1974), Kenny Wheeler and David Darling.

Later Garbarek appeared increasingly as a musician in projects with world musical background in appearance, but also as Jan Garbarek Group with Rainer Brüninghaus and Eberhard Weber, and Manu Katché / Trilok Gurtu / Naná Vasconcelos / Marilyn Mazur.

In 1986, Jan Garbarek, the supporting musical theme in the film music of Eleni Karaindrou for the film The Beekeeper (O melissokomos ) by Theo Angelopoulos.

Garbarek has composed and played the music for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, which took place in February 1994. The musical themes were partly taken from the CD " I Took Up The Runes " (1990 ), especially the Molde Canticle, also interpreted by Sissel.

Published in 1994, Garbarek the acclaimed best-selling album Officium. On the recording, he accompanied with his saxophone as a "fifth voice" the Hilliard Ensemble in works from Gregorian chant to Renaissance.

As an important influence for the game Garbarek applies, in addition to the classic American jazz, especially the traditional Norwegian folklore and orientation on vocals, the Garbarek game gives a completely own distinctive sound. " The utopia of infinite breath and natural euphony drives Garbarek's music, " says Ulrich Greiner. His music looks Garbarek itself related only remotely to jazz. Almost all albums Garbarek appear on the ECM label. He is since 1970 on ECM and today one of the stars of the label. His influence affected the entire Scandinavian jazz scene formative.

Since 1968, Garbarek is married to the author Vigdis Garbarek and has, since 1970 a daughter, Anja, who is also a musician.

Jan Garbarek plays mostly soprano saxophone, but also tenor and bass saxophone.
