Jan Garber

January Garber; actually Jacob Charles Garber ( born November 5, 1894 in Indianapolis, Indiana; † 5 October 1977 in Shreveport, Louisiana) was an American violinist and big band leader in the swing and popular music.

Life

January Garber had in 1917 a first band; its heyday was the band leader in the 1920s and 1930s, when he was " The Idol of the Airwaves " - was as successful as his contemporaries Paul Whiteman and Guy Lombardo.

Garber was after the First World War violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, founded in 1921 with pianist Milton Davis the Garber -Davis Orchestra, which existed until 1924. Its headquarters were Atlanta; they played in the south and southeastern United States, where it enjoyed great popularity. After the separation from Davis he formed his own orchestra in Chicago that is both sweet and hot dance music played and recorded for MCA. During the Depression era Garber had problems to continue the band; in the 1930s, he formed the ensemble as a Big Band around, moved in 1934 to the West Coast, where he had an engagement at Catalina Iceland 's Avalon Ballroom and later at the Palomar Ballroom, and recorded a number of albums for Victor. During the Second World War Garber played ( instead of the current in the Guy Lombardo similar Sweet ) in swing style, his arranger during this phase was Gray Rains, band vocalist was Liz Tilton. Since his audience Garbers not relished change of style, he solved the swing band in early 1945 and returned six months later with a new ensemble back to his sweet style and took for Black & White Records on (among other things with a version of Irving Berlin's "Doing What Comes Natur'lly "); his arranger was now Larry Owen, longtime collaborator, saxophonist Freddie Large. Garber pulled mid-50 to Shreveport, Louisiana, went into the winter months at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans; he led until the early 1970s own formations.

Garber took on in his career, more than 750 records, mostly for Victor, Decca Records, Columbia Records, Okeh Records and Capitol Records.
