Jan Hempel

January Hempel ( born August 21, 1971 in Dresden ) is a retired German diver. He won 1986-2003 a total of 14 medals at Olympic Games and World and European Championships, including four European titles and 50 national titles. He is in the German sports story of the most successful athletes in this sport.

Sporting successes

Jan Hempel took off in 1986 at four Summer Olympics, three world championships and eight European championships. He won at the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta in 1996, a silver medal in platform diving and at the Summer Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney, together with Heiko Meyer a bronze medal in synchronized diving from the tower. At the 1998 World Championships, he finished with Michael Kuehne second place in the synchronized diving from the tower and the third place in diving.

In 1993 he was European champion from the 3- meter board. Just four years earlier, he had starting at the European Championships in 1989, at that time still for the German Democratic Republic (GDR), won a bronze medal in the same discipline, at the European Championships 1995, he won second place. Diving In 1997 he was European champion and 1987, 1989 and 1995 Vice European Champion, 1993, he reached in this discipline in third. In addition, it was established in 1997 along with Michael Kuehne and 1999 together with Heiko Meyer European champion in synchronized diving from the tower. He also won five titles at Junior European Championships.

January Hempel won outdoor and indoor in various disciplines total of 48 national titles at German Championships and was also twice East German champion. His home clubs were the SC Einheit Dresden and later the Dresdner SC. In 2003, he ended his active sports career. He is married and father of two daughters.
