Jan Hoet

Jan Hoet ( born June 23, 1936 in Leuven, Belgium, † February 27, 2014 in Ghent, Belgium) was a Belgian art historian and exhibition curator.

Life and work

Hoet studied art history and archeology. He received his doctorate on the topic Victor Servranckx and the first abstract in Belgium. 1970 took over Hoet Professor of Aesthetics at the Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1975, he directed the Museum van Hedendaagse Art in Ghent. Since 1999 he was the director of the newly opened Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Art ( SMAK ) in Ghent in Belgium.

In addition, Hoet was curator of numerous international exhibitions of contemporary art, including Chambres d' amis in Ghent. For a time, the boundary between art and everyday life has been lifted with this exhibition concept. In Germany he became known as the artistic director of Documenta IX ( 1992) in Kassel. This takes place in five -year intervals art show is the most important art exhibition worldwide. From 2003 to 2008 he headed the MARTa Herford, a museum of contemporary art and design in Herford. Already the first exhibition was scandalous because the district authority said that the works of the Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard issued are harmful to minors.
