Jan Ignác František Vojta

January Ignatius František Vojta (* before 1660, † before 1725) was a Czech doctor, violinist and composer of the Baroque.

Life and work

František Vojta, a contemporary of the beaver, the Jesuit seminar attended St. Wenceslas in Prague's Old Town. At the University of Prague, he first studied philosophy and received on June 26, 1684 the title of Doctor of Medicine. Vojta was house physician at the Benedictine monastery of St. Nicholas in Prague. During his lifetime he was considered one of the most popular violinist and composer in the city. There is currently evidence to 27 works, of which so far only seven have been discovered. They are located in libraries from Brno, Prague, Vienna and in the Codex rust in Paris. Vojta sonatas are the oldest examples of violin sonatas by a Czech composer.

Several of the sonatas were written for skordierte violin, a then popular practice that allowed expression, effects and desired moods. The Czech Ensemble " La Gambetta " played in 2006 for the first time an all known instrumental and vocal works Vojta.
