Jan Jacob Rochussen

Jan Jacob Rochussen ( born October 23, 1797 in Etten / Brabant, † January 21, 1871 in The Hague) was a Dutch statesman. 1858-1860 he was Chairman of the Council of Ministers.

Life

Rochussen was a typical representative of the Amsterdam business world and a confidant Willems II, as well Willems III. under which he was Finance Minister, respectively. In 1843 he was one of the first ministers who were forced by the Second Chamber of the States General to resign. 1845-1851 he was Governor-General of the colony of the Dutch East Indies and in 1858 Colonial Secretary and Chairman of the Council of Ministers. Even though in the Dutch East Indies in 1859 he abolished slavery, he was heavily criticized for his conservative Governance in the colonial questions. His second wife Elisabeth Charlotta was a Creole.
