Jan Jakob Maria de Groot

January Jakob Maria de Groot ( born February 18, 1854 in Schiedam, † September 24, 1921 in Berlin) was a Dutch sinologist.

Life

De Groot's focus was on Chinese religion and history. As of December 9 1891 he was a professor of literature and philosophy at the University of Leiden, where about history, literature, state and Ethnology Dutch East Indies taught. He also was on January 14, 1904 professor of Chinese language and, after he had resigned his professorship in Leiden on December 1, 1911 am, on 1 January 1912 at the University of Berlin professor. In 1911 he was elected as a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences.
