Jan Karafiát (author)

January Karafiát ( born January 4, 1846 in Jimramov ( Ingrowitz ); † January 31, 1929 in Prague ) was a tschechischsprachiger pastor of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, writer and publicist.

Life

Jan Karafiat came from the former Hungarian noble family of Karafiat, established, inter alia, in Brno, Moravskotřebova ( Czech Moravska Trebova ) and Jimramov in Moravia ( Czech Karafiát z Jimramova ). He attended high school in Leitomischl and the Evangelical Stiftische school in Gütersloh and studied Protestant theology in Berlin (1866-1867), Bonn (1867-1868) and Vienna (1866-1869) afterwards. Then, as an educator in Germany and Scotland (1871-1872) worked, then vicar of the Reformed Church in Roudnice nad Labem, 1872-1873 priest at evangelical seminar in Čáslav, where he taught theology, pedagogy, didactics and the Czech language. From 1874 to 1895 he headed the Parish in Velka Lhota and Great - Meseritsch. After disputes with the Protestant Churches in Vienna, he retired to Prague, was from 1896 to 1905 editor of the " Reformovane listy " wrote a translation of the Bible and wrote children's books.

Works ( Overview )

  • January Karafiat revised after 1896 the Kralice Bible ( Czech 1920 appeared as Bible Kralická ), in which he tried to retain the original language; machining, which remained almost incomprehensible to laymen. Language analysis and translation of the New Testament are Kralice in 1878 published in the Czech language.
  • Successful were his books for children. The book The Beetles ( Broučci, 1876), has been launched ninety times. Main character in this children's book is a little fireflies with the characteristics of a human child and his life among the surrounding insect, a kind of allegory of human life, of course for children. The rights to this book, he appropriated the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren ( Českobratrská církev evangelická ).
  • From 1896 to 1905 January Karafiat published in Prague, published every two months writing the Reformovane Listy, for which he has written articles on his biblical studies and sermons in Czech. In addition, he anonymously published more theological works and stories.
