Jan Kasprowicz

January Kasprowicz ( born December 12, 1860 in Szymborze at Inowrocław; † August 1, 1926 in Poronin in Zakopane ) was a Polish writer, poet, literary translator and university teacher.

Life

After the high schools in Ratibor and poses, he studied in Leipzig and Breslau philology and philosophy. In 1885 he published his first poems, worked as a journalist, graduated in 1904 and received in 1908 the chair of comparative literature at the University of Lviv, which he was rector from 1921 to 1922.

Kasprowicz belonged to the circle of the Young Poland poet ( Młoda Polska) and wrote stressed form, expressive poems. He translated works by Shakespeare, Byron, Goethe, Schiller, among others into Polish.
